BRIDEGROOM is a documentary directed by Linda Bloodworth-Thomason that tells the emotional journey of Shane and Tom, two young men in a loving and committed relationship — a relationship that was cut tragically short by a misstep off the side of a rooftop where he was photographing a friend. The story of what happened after this accidental death– of how people without the legal protections of marriage can find themselves completely shut out and ostracized– is poignant, enraging and opens a window onto the issue of marriage equality like no speech or lecture ever will.

On May 7, 2012, the anniversary of Tom’s death, after a year of documenting his own grief, Shane decided to make a video tribute to his partner entitled “It Could Happen To You.” This film, posted on YouTube, received over 3.4 million views and has been translated into over 20 different languages. The impact of Shane’s YouTube video and the raw nerve it touched, tells us this is an important story that needs to be told.

With the incredible support from influential people like Brad and George Takei and Neil Patrick Harris, Bridegroom was successfully funded on July 19, 2012 by over 6,500 people on Kickstarter.com becoming the most funded documentary in the history of crowd funding, and released in the fall of 2013.

The documentary Premiered at the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival and will Premiere on the Oprah Winfrey Network October 27th 2013, at 10PM.

  • I’m a mess after this!! It’s so sad, they were beautiful together

  • I’ve seen his You Tube post and I’m glad this is getting much more exposure. I hope that this movie will touch the hearts and reveal to those members of Tom’s family the damage they have done Shane as well as to Tom, who obviously loved Shane very much. This movie should serve as a rallying cry, not on gay rights, but “equal rights.”

  • Oh my goodness that story made me cry I saw it on YouTube. Couldn’t even finish it….

  • So sad … but SO BEAUTIFUL. I’m speechless after watching both jumps … but I want to see the Movie. It impacted me almost like ” The Laramie Project”.

  • Oh my god get the tissues.
    I am crying now.
I know how he feels i was told I was not welcome at my grandmothers funeral because i was gay.

This is going to be a wonderful film and thank you to those including George Takei and Neal thank you so much.

  • So moving.
I will be watching on the Oprah Winfrey Network.

  • I will definately be setting my DVR for this

  • That is a sad situation to be in. However, I’m glad he is fighting to make things right.
But what gets me is how families think by preventing their gay son’s lover from attending the services somehow their relationship never happened. I’ll never quite understand that one.

  • Oh wow! :'(

  • How sad I sure want to see the movie I am so proud of the people who got behind this and backed the making of it and God Bless both of the guys it is about

  • Wow! We have come so far, yet so much further to go!

  • OMG I came across this last summer(2012) I was engaged at the time. I became a sponsor for this. I cried many times watching it. I can’t wait to receive my copy. It’s such a heart wrenching story. Unfortunately many on Adam don’t want to have the beautiful thing these two wonderful man had.

  • Sad story, but it happens in straight life too, so not a just a GAY issue.

  • Thats so sad. I hate hearing about someone dying. Its horrible

  • I bet they had hot sex… Wouldve loved to see them naked.. hot

    Great story. Can’t wait.

  • As one critic says, “A poignant and moving story that reinforces the age-old stereotypes of the gay brand.”

  • If people don’t understand after this beautiful movie, am so sorry for them…Love is love

  • It’s just a movie. A contrived series of scripted events. It’s bad enough that it happens to real people, but stupid for others to hone in on someone else’s tragedy and pretend it’s happening to them.

  • This movie is a perfect example of what I have been saying for years. As the years have gone by our culture has gotten lost in the battle for equality. Somewhere along the lines it went from being about love to being about money. I remember when I was a kid the fight wasn’t about tax breaks and insurance claims and monetary benefits. It was about whether a same-sex partner could be permitted entrance to a hospital room to hold his/her sick partners hand. It was about a same-sex partner being allowed information as to his/her partners medical condition. It was about the freedom to walk down the street hand in hand without fear of prosecution. I hope that someday we can get back to the real fight and stop focusing so much on the materialistic and monetary side of it all. And I sincerely hope that this movie serves as a reminder for why our elders stood up and said, “enough is enough!”

  • When I saw the trailer for this i wanted to see it right away. Now i finally got it on Netflix, so I will be watching it. What bothered me the most is the fact that many couples are going through this very thing. Gay couples who are involved in a tragedy, then have to deal with a non caring family member who thinks they are dong the right thing. That’s why having a living will is the best way for your loved ones to know, and respect your wishes, if the unthinkable happens.
